Zverev claims US Open crown as Rybakina, Skupski and Hewett finish a defining weekend
Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton to win the men’s US Open title, completing a finals weekend that also crowned Elena Rybakina and Neal Skupski and saw Alfie Hewett lift the wheelchair singles trophy.
Alexander Zverev finished the US Open with the biggest result of the weekend, beating Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2 in Sunday’s men’s singles final. The top seed had to absorb Shelton’s best response in the third set, then closed the match in four.
Zverev holds off Shelton’s final surge Shelton, the eighth seed, made the final a contest after losing the opening set and the second-set tie-break. He took the third 7-5, but Zverev regained control in the fourth. The official final record lists three sets won by Zverev and one by Shelton across the 3-hour 33-minute match.
Rybakina turns a set down into the women’s title Elena Rybakina also came from behind in the final, beating top seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. The second seed’s win made the women’s singles final another three-set match between the tournament’s top two seeds, with Rybakina taking the deciding set decisively. Saturday’s result gives the WTA side of the draw a clear new champion while Sabalenka leaves New York as runner-up. The official singles records, rather than ranking projections, are the useful reference point immediately after the tournament.
Skupski and Hewett put Britain on the champions’ list Neal Skupski won the men’s doubles title alongside Christian Harrison. The fifth seeds beat Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz, the sixth seeds, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in Saturday’s final. Alfie Hewett added the wheelchair men’s singles title to the British results, recovering from a 6-0 opening set against top seed Tokito Oda before winning 0-6, 7-6 (7-5). Hewett took the second-set tie-break and the match in two sets.
New York closes with the autumn calendar ahead The official US Open results feed now records the men’s singles final as completed, with no further tournament-day match to schedule. Zverev’s four-set finish, Rybakina’s comeback and the British doubles and wheelchair titles are the results that travel beyond New York as the ATP and WTA seasons move into their post-US Open autumn programme.
