Ben Shelton reaches US Open final as Zverev sets Saturday showdown

Ben Shelton recovered to beat Frances Tiafoe and reach a US Open final against Alexander Zverev, while Neal Skupski and Alfie Hewett headline Saturday’s British interest.

Ben Shelton will face top seed Alexander Zverev in the US Open men’s singles final after a night when the American recovered from a slow start against Frances Tiafoe and Zverev squeezed past Karen Khachanov in two tight tie-break sets. Shelton turns the semi-final around Eleventh seed Tiafoe took the opening set 6–4, but eighth seed Shelton levelled with a 6–3 second set and then kept the match on his terms. He won the third 6–3 and closed out the semi-final 7–5 in the fourth. The official record gives Shelton a 3–1 win after 3:17. That puts two American men’s finalists on opposite sides of the net from Germany and Kazakhstan: Shelton against the first seed Zverev, who beat Khachanov 6–3, 7–6(7), 7–6(6). Zverev did not need a fourth set, but both tie-breaks went deep, with the second decided 8–6. Saturday’s finals weekend schedule The men’s doubles final is the first match on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 12:00pm New York time (5:00pm BST). Neal Skupski and Christian Harrison, the fifth seeds, play sixth seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz. The women’s singles final between top seed Aryna Sabalenka and second seed Elena Rybakina is listed not before 4:00pm New York time (9:00pm BST). Saturday also brings the wheelchair singles finals at 11:00am New York time (4:00pm BST). Alfie Hewett, seeded second, meets top seed Tokito Oda in the men’s final. In the women’s final, top seed Yui Kamiji faces second seed Diede de Groot. Titles decided and still to play for Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend won the women’s doubles title on Friday, beating Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5–7, 6–0, 6–2. In wheelchair men’s doubles, Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid beat Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren 2–6, 6–3, [10]–[7]. The junior singles finals are also set for Saturday. Top seed Xinran Sun plays Anna Pushkareva in the girls’ final, while top seed Guto Miguel faces Marcel Latak in the boys’ final.
