Wimbledon countdown sharpens as qualifying reaches final day and grass-court contenders are tested

Wimbledon’s build-up moves into a decisive phase on Thursday, with qualifying reaching its final stage at Roehampton and several leading grass-court contenders facing fresh questions before The Championships begin next week.

For British tennis, the immediate focus is on Heather Watson, Billy Harris, Oliver Tarvet and Max Basing, who all came through Wednesday’s qualifying matches to move within one win of the Wimbledon main draw. Their final-round matches will determine whether they join the main-field storylines when play begins at the All England Club on Monday 29 June.

The LTA reported that Watson fought back to beat Tatiana Prozorova 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours and 42 minutes, saving two break points at 4-3 down in the final set before completing the comeback. Tarvet beat Alexis Galarneau 7-5, 6-2, Harris defeated Zsombor Piros 6-4, 6-4, and Basing beat Tom Gentzsch 7-5, 6-2.

Dan Evans’ singles run ended in the second round of qualifying, with Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate winning 7-5, 6-0. ATP coverage also highlighted Schoolkate’s straight-sets victory and the British trio of Harris, Tarvet and Basing advancing, while Evans is expected to turn his attention to the Wimbledon doubles draw alongside Henry Searle.

Bad Homburg brings late grass-court movement

Away from Roehampton, the final week before Wimbledon has already delivered notable movement on the WTA grass courts. Emma Navarro beat top seed Iga Swiatek 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 at Bad Homburg, a result confirmed by both the WTA and Reuters, to reach the quarter-finals for the fourth straight year at the German event.

The WTA also confirmed that Elina Svitolina withdrew before her quarter-final against Wang Xinyu because of a right hip injury, sending Wang into the semi-finals by walkover. With Wimbledon so close, any late physical concern is likely to be watched carefully, but the published information so far only confirms the Bad Homburg withdrawal.

The Bad Homburg draw has also produced a strong set of Wimbledon warm-up markers: Naomi Osaka beat Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals, Karolina Muchova defeated Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1, 6-1, and Ekaterina Alexandrova beat second seed Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-4.

Draw day now looms

The Championships are scheduled to run from Monday 29 June to Sunday 12 July, with the main draws set to frame the fortnight once qualifying is complete. Until then, Thursday’s Roehampton matches carry the clearest British stakes: four players, one more win each, and a place at Wimbledon on the line.

With the main draw so close, the day is less about long-range predictions and more about who can arrive at SW19 healthy, match-sharp and safely through the final gate.
