Wimbledon draw sets up Sinner-Djokovic storyline as Serena Williams returns

The Wimbledon singles draws have given the Championships an immediate set of storylines before main-draw play begins at the All England Club on Monday.

In the men’s draw, defending champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner has landed in the same half as seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, creating the possibility of a heavyweight semi-final if both navigate the first five rounds. Sinner opens against Miomir Kecmanovic, while Djokovic starts against Wu Yibing.

One of the standout first-round matches is Taylor Fritz against Jack Draper. Fritz is seeded sixth, but Draper’s grass-court pedigree and home support make it one of the more eye-catching early tests in the draw. Alexander Zverev anchors the opposite half as the No. 2 seed.

The women’s event has a major storyline of its own, with Serena Williams returning to Wimbledon singles competition after receiving a wild card. The seven-time Wimbledon singles champion has been drawn against Australia’s Maya Joint in the first round, while she and Venus Williams have also received a doubles wild card.

Aryna Sabalenka leads the women’s draw as the No. 1 seed and starts against Teodora Kostovic. No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina opens against Lois Boisson, while defending champion Iga Swiatek begins against Taylor Townsend. British interest includes Emma Raducanu, seeded 30th and drawn against Antonia Ruzic, and Hannah Klugman, who faces Barbora Krejcikova.

The draw also underlines how quickly the grass-court landscape has shifted in the build-up. Wimbledon’s official and tour information lists several late changes and wild cards across the fields, while the confirmed schedule has singles action running from 29 June, with the women’s singles final on 11 July and the men’s singles final on 12 July.

With qualifying now complete and the draws set, the tournament moves from countdown mode into match-week focus. The first two days should quickly test both the big names and the home hopes, especially with Fritz against Draper and Williams against Joint already giving Centre Court schedulers plenty to consider.
