Dart exits as US Open third-round draw takes shape
Harriet Dart’s run ended against Marie Bouzkova, while Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka and a cluster of leading seeds moved into the US Open third round.
Harriet Dart’s US Open run ended in the second round as Marie Bouzkova won 6-2, 6-2. The Czech 25th seed will now face Iga Swiatek, who dealt with Nadia Podoroska in equally straightforward fashion.
Dart’s campaign ends against Bouzkova
Bouzkova broke early in both sets and kept Dart from settling into the match. The 6-2, 6-2 result leaves Francesca Jones as the remaining British name in the women’s singles draw after her win over Magda Linette earlier in the tournament.
Swiatek beat Podoroska 6-3, 6-2. The eighth seed will play Bouzkova in the third round. Iva Jovic, the 14th seed, also advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Magdalena Frech, and will meet 17th seed Alexandra Eala, who beat Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-4.
Osaka and Keys survive different tests
Naomi Osaka recovered from dropping the second set to beat Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Her third-round opponent is 23rd seed Elise Mertens, a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) winner against Maria Timofeeva.
Madison Keys needed a deciding tie-break to get past Anna Bondar, winning 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). She now meets Qinwen Zheng, who beat Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Amanda Anisimova also went through, beating Lilli Tagger 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Aryna Sabalenka beat Polina Iatcenko 6-1, 6-1, while Ann Li removed Donna Vekic 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Elina Svitolina came through a tighter contest with Maya Joint, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4.
Doubles produces a late three-set finish
There was a long finish in the women’s doubles draw as Ena Shibahara and Lanlana Tararudee recovered to beat Kimberly Birrell and Peyton Stearns 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Marta Kostyuk and Elena Gabriela Ruse advanced 6-3, 6-4, while Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani won 6-1, 6-3.
Third-round matches to watch
Swiatek versus Bouzkova and Jovic versus Eala bring two very different tests on the women’s side. Osaka meets Mertens, Keys faces Zheng, and Svitolina plays 21st seed Anna Kalinskaya. In the men’s draw, Carlos Alcaraz is scheduled to meet Yibing Wu, Taylor Fritz faces 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo, and Daniil Medvedev plays 26th seed Arthur Rinderknech.
