British qualifiers find their US Open landing spots

British qualifiers find their US Open landing spots

The US Open singles draws now show where qualifying has landed: Harry Wendelken has Luciano Darderi, Harriet Dart faces Peyton Stearns, and Jacob Fearnley has a live opener against Martin Landaluce.

The final quiet day before main-draw tennis has done the useful thing. New York’s qualifying week now has a proper set of first-round assignments, and the British interest has spread across both singles draws.

Harry Wendelken has the sharpest assignment of the group. The official men’s draw lists him as a qualifier against 21st seed Luciano Darderi, with the winner moving into a section that also contains Dalibor Svrcina and wild card Valentin Royer. Darderi will give him a proper baseline and forehand test straight away; Wendelken cannot spend the first set easing into the occasion.

Fearnley gets a playable opening

Jacob Fearnley’s main-draw reprieve has turned into one of the more watchable British first-round matches. He is placed against Martin Landaluce, who is marked in the official draw as a lucky loser. That is a far cleaner route than landing straight on a seed, and it should carry some edge because both players arrive through the messy back door of a Grand Slam draw.

Toby Samuel, already safely in the field after Cristian Garin retired during qualifying, has Tomas Machac in round one. Jan Choinski drew Botic van de Zandschulp, another name with far more tour-level experience than his route into the draw suggests. Arthur Fery has a heavier seed on the other side of the net in Lorenzo Musetti, while Cameron Norrie, seeded 29th, opens against Luca Van Assche.

Dart and Jones land in different corners

On the women’s side, Harriet Dart’s reward is Peyton Stearns. It is a clean first-round match to circle because Stearns tends to make rallies physical quickly, and Dart will need the same stubborn rhythm that got her through the last qualifying push.

Francesca Jones is drawn against Magda Linette. The winner would then face either Iva Jovic or Magdalena Frech, so Jones has not been dumped straight into a top seed’s lap. Katie Boulter begins against American Carol Lee, with Anouk Koevermans or wild card Caty McNally waiting for the winner.

The top of the women’s draw is already pinned down. Aryna Sabalenka opens against Camila Osorio, Coco Gauff starts with Zeynep Sonmez, Iga Swiatek faces Wang Xiyu, Naomi Osaka has Anastasia Zakharova, and Elena Rybakina begins against American Thea Frodin. Venus Williams, in on a wild card, has a first-round meeting with Sofia Kenin, which gives the opening schedule an immediate New York crowd match even before the seeds settle in.

The draw has stopped being theoretical

There is still a little waiting for court order and exact timing, but the useful part of the preparation is done. Qualifiers are no longer floating initials beside empty lines. Wendelken knows he has Darderi. Dart knows she has Stearns. Jones has Linette. Fearnley has Landaluce.

That is where the US Open build-up becomes easiest to follow. Wendelken has to solve a seeded opponent before Darderi can run him around. Dart has to keep Stearns from turning the match into one-way pressure. Fearnley has a first-round chance that will feel even bigger because of how late it arrived.
