Fery stuns Dimitrov as Wimbledon quarter-final picture sharpens

Arthur Fery’s improbable Wimbledon run gathered even more pace on Monday as the British wildcard beat Grigor Dimitrov in a five-set Centre Court thriller to reach the quarter-finals.

Fery came through 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7), closing out the match on his first match point after a tense deciding-set tie-break. It extends one of the stories of this year’s Championships and keeps a home singles hope alive deep into the second week.

The 23-year-old will next face Flavio Cobolli, who continued his own strong grass-court run by beating Alex de Minaur 7-5, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Cobolli’s straight-sets win removed one of the higher seeds from the bottom half of the men’s draw and set up a quarter-final with a very different feel: an established top-level climber against the tournament’s breakout British story.

Taylor Fritz also booked his place in the last eight, defeating Alexander Bublik 7-6 (1), 6-4, 6-4. The American’s serving and first-strike tennis proved too steady for Bublik, giving Fritz another deep run at SW19 and a quarter-final target to prepare for.

One men’s fourth-round match remains unfinished. Alexander Zverev led Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 7-5, 3-3 when play was suspended shortly before Wimbledon’s 11pm curfew, meaning that contest will resume on Tuesday.

In the women’s draw, Jasmine Paolini ended Alexandra Eala’s breakthrough run with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win. Linda Noskova also advanced, beating Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6 (2), as the final quarter-final places began to fall into place.

With the Championships now moving fully into the quarter-final stage, the storylines are nicely balanced: established contenders still in control, seeds continuing to fall, and Fery giving the Wimbledon crowd a genuine home-player fairytale to follow.
