Fery leads British charge into Wimbledon third round as seeds hold firm

Arthur Fery gave Wimbledon a home storyline to savour on Thursday, fighting back from a set down to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time as several leading seeds moved safely through at the All England Club.

The British wildcard defeated Finland's Otto Virtanen 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-3 on Court 18, a result confirmed by both Wimbledon and the LTA. The official Wimbledon report noted that Fery became only the fourth British men's singles wildcard since 2000 to reach the third round at SW19.

Fery will next face Eastbourne champion Zizou Bergs, with the match set to be their first tour-level meeting. His progress stood out on a mixed day for British singles players: the LTA reported that Katie Swan, Jacob Fearnley and Jan Choinski all lost in the second round.

Swan pushed Madison Keys in the second set before the Eastbourne champion and 26th seed closed out a 6-1, 6-4 win. Fearnley fell to Jaume Munar 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-4, while Choinski took the opening set against 17th seed Frances Tiafoe before Tiafoe recovered to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.

Elsewhere, Thursday was mostly a day of consolidation for the higher-ranked players. CBS Sports listed straight-sets wins for Alexander Zverev over Valentin Royer, Alex de Minaur over Adrian Mannarino and Taylor Fritz over Patrick Kypson. Matteo Berrettini produced one of the men's notable seeded exits, beating 20th seed Arthur Fils 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

In the women's draw, AP News reported that Amanda Anisimova avoided a second-round upset against Sofia Kenin, surviving 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 after a deciding match tie-break. Iga Swiatek beat Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-3, while Elena Rybakina moved past Caty McNally 6-1, 6-2.

Alexandra Eala also reached the third round, coming from a set down to beat Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, a result reported by Olympics.com and ESPN. Joint had been one of the stories of the opening week after ending Serena Williams' singles comeback in round one.

With the first week now moving into the third round, Wimbledon is beginning to sharpen from early survival into genuine contender territory. For British fans, Fery's run gives the draw a fresh local thread, while the broader picture remains crowded with major names still moving efficiently through SW19.
